The Akal Takht Secretariat has issued official letters to all Sikh members of the Punjab Legislative Assembly and Sikh cabinet ministers, summoning them to appear at the Akal Takht Secretariat in Amritsar on June 29 in connection with the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. The Act was passed by the Punjab Government in April 2026.
Summons Details and Procedure
Bagicha Singh, in-charge of the Akal Takht Secretariat, confirmed that the letters were sent on the directions of Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj. The notices were dispatched via email and WhatsApp using contact details from the Punjab Vidhan Sabha's official website. The letters were sent on June 17 and June 18, with a separate communication to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on June 23. Secretariat officials also contacted legislators and ministers by phone to inform them about the letters and the scheduled appearance.
Appearance and Written Submissions
All Sikh MLAs and cabinet ministers have been asked to appear at 11 am on June 29 at the Akal Takht Secretariat in Amritsar to present their views on the matter. Additionally, non-Sikh members of the Punjab Cabinet have been asked to submit their written responses on the issue before June 29.
