Berhampur Municipal Corporation Rolls Out QR Code System for Streamlined Rent Collection
In a significant move towards digital governance, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) introduced a QR code-based system on Saturday to facilitate hassle-free monthly rent collection from stalls and vending units across the city. This initiative aims to modernize payment processes and enhance efficiency for both the civic body and local vendors.
Launch Event and Official Statements
Mayor Sanghamitra Dalei officially launched the distribution of QR codes to stall owners at a dedicated function in Berhampur. "We hope this online payment mode proves beneficial to both the civic body and vendors," she stated, emphasizing the dual advantages of convenience and transparency. On the launch day, BeMC distributed QR codes to at least 10 vendors, with plans to extend this to all 868 stalls and 236 vending units rented out by the corporation over the next week, according to BeMC assistant commissioner Ronit Kumar.
Background and Financial Impact
Currently, BeMC collects approximately Rs 1.6 crore annually in rent from these stalls and vending units. However, manual collection methods have posed challenges due to limited personnel—only two collection staff are available. This has led to irregular payments, as many vendors reported difficulties in paying rent on time due to the absence of collectors. "Their complaints will be addressed when we introduce online payment facilities. This facility will also maintain transparency, while the corporation will maintain the records of the payment of every individual," explained Ronit Kumar.
Implementation and Future Plans
The QR code system assigns a unique code to each vendor, allowing them to pay rent online seamlessly. This initiative was directed by BeMC commissioner Prathamesh Arvind Rajeshir after a review of monthly rent collection processes. The move is expected to increase rent collection efficiency and reduce delays. Looking ahead, Mayor Dalei indicated that BeMC will consider introducing QR code facilities for other tax collections based on the success of this project, potentially expanding digital payment options across municipal services.
Benefits and Community Response
Vendors have welcomed the new system, anticipating it will eliminate the hassles associated with manual payments and ensure timely transactions. The online mode is also projected to boost annual rent collection figures by making payments more accessible and reliable. This step aligns with broader trends in digital India, promoting technological adoption in local governance to improve service delivery and accountability.
