Bihar's Rural Roads Get Major Safety Overhaul
The Rural Works Department (RWD) of Bihar has launched a comprehensive road safety initiative targeting accident-prone areas across the state's vast rural network. Officials have identified more than 36,400 sensitive locations on rural roads and bridges that require immediate safety interventions.
Focus on High-Risk Areas
These identified spots include stretches near educational institutions, primary health centers (PHCs), hospitals, and crowded town areas. The department is implementing various traffic-calming measures specifically designed to protect vulnerable pedestrians, including schoolchildren and the elderly.
According to an official RWD communiqué, zebra crossings have already been painted at 26,000 busy locations throughout Bihar's rural road system. "The primary objective is to facilitate safe crossing for all pedestrians, even in smaller towns where traffic management has traditionally been inadequate," the statement explained.
Comprehensive Safety Measures
The safety program extends beyond pedestrian crossings to include multiple protective installations:
- Crash barriers made of steel or plastic along dangerous curves
- Standardized stop signs at critical intersections
- Speed breakers to force vehicle deceleration
- Speed-limit signage in high-risk zones
- Advanced junction warnings before busy crossings
Additional accident-prone points receiving attention include sharp bends and heavily trafficked road intersections where visibility or navigation presents particular challenges.
Legal Mandate and Implementation
This extensive safety drive follows Supreme Court directives and strict instructions from Bihar's Road Construction Department. The communiqué emphasized that implementing road safety norms has been made mandatory for all rural roads, whether recently completed or currently under construction.
"These structural improvements and standardized sign systems have demonstrated effectiveness in accident reduction and speed limit enforcement," officials noted. "They provide crucial guidance to drivers, particularly during challenging conditions like foggy nights when visibility is severely compromised."
The initiative represents a key component of Bihar's broader road safety management policy, which aims to systematically address the state's rising accident statistics through preventive infrastructure rather than merely reactive measures.
