Border Roads Organisation Achieves Early Opening of Jammu Highway
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully completed snow clearance operations on National Highway 701A, commonly known as the Old Mughal Road, and opened two crucial stretches on Friday, well ahead of the typical March-end schedule. This early accomplishment marks a significant achievement in maintaining vital connectivity in the Jammu & Kashmir region.
Strategic Road Sections Cleared Under Key Projects
Working under extremely harsh weather conditions, BRO teams cleared the stretch from Bufliaz in Poonch district to Peer Ki Gali under Project Sampark. Simultaneously, the section from Shopian to Peer Ki Gali was cleared under Project Beacon. The coordinated effort ensured both routes were operational ahead of expectations.
"During the road opening ceremony, MoRTH director-general VK Rajawat, along with Chief Engineers from Project Sampark and Beacon, were present at Peer Ki Gali to oversee the operations," stated defence PRO Lt Col Suneel Bartwal on Friday.
Safety Concerns and Official Advisories Issued
Despite the successful clearance, authorities have issued important safety warnings. "Snow accumulation still exists on the adjoining hill slopes at certain vulnerable locations. Due to prevailing weather conditions, the possibility of avalanches cannot be ruled out," cautioned Lt Col Bartwal.
He strongly urged commuters to strictly follow traffic advisories issued by the district administrations of Poonch and Shopian. An official spokesperson emphasized that travelers must exercise extreme caution while using the newly opened stretches.
"Movement may be regulated depending upon weather conditions and safety assessments by authorities," the spokesperson clarified, highlighting the need for flexibility in travel plans.
Leadership Recognition and Future Planning
Director-General of MoRTH VK Rajawat praised all personnel involved in the snow clearance operations, acknowledging their efforts under challenging circumstances. "He said route recce and planning for the widening of NH-701A was in progress," added Col Bartwal, indicating forward-looking infrastructure development.
During his visit, the DG MoRTH also reviewed work progress on NH-144A across all packages and directed officials to expedite completion, demonstrating continued focus on regional connectivity improvements.
The early opening of these highway sections represents a critical boost to transportation and economic activity in the region, particularly as weather conditions begin to improve. However, authorities maintain that safety remains paramount, with ongoing assessments to ensure traveler protection against potential natural hazards.
