Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Flags Off 500 Electric Buses on BJP's First Anniversary in Power
In a significant move to bolster sustainable transportation, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated 500 new electric buses on Sunday, marking the first anniversary of the Bharatiya Janata Party's return to power in the national capital. The event took place at the iconic Ramlila Maidan, symbolizing a major step forward in the city's green mobility initiatives.
Expanding Delhi's Electric Bus Fleet
With this latest addition, the total number of electric buses operating on Delhi's routes has now reached an impressive 4,000. Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the government's ambitious target to increase this fleet to approximately 17,000 by the end of 2027, showcasing a strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. The newly flagged-off buses are equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning, CCTV cameras, and panic buttons, ensuring both passenger safety and comfort.
Enhancing Public Transport Infrastructure
In addition to the electric buses, Gupta also inaugurated three interstate buses connecting Delhi to Panipat, further expanding the region's connectivity. She highlighted the progress in Delhi's metro network, noting that it currently spans 400 kilometers across the National Capital Region and is set to extend to 500 kilometers upon the completion of Phase 5. This dual focus on buses and metro underscores a comprehensive approach to upgrading public transportation.
Policy Announcements and Political Remarks
During the ceremony, Chief Minister Gupta announced that a policy to regularise e-rickshaws in Delhi will be introduced soon, aiming to streamline and integrate these popular vehicles into the city's transport ecosystem. She took the opportunity to criticize the previous Aam Aadmi Party government, led by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing it of neglecting basic necessities like clean water, proper sewer systems, and healthcare. Gupta recalled the BJP's historic victory last year, winning 48 out of 70 seats, and mocked Kejriwal's past arrogance, stating that the people of Delhi had decisively rejected his leadership.

BJP chief Nitin Nabin, who attended the flagging-off event, praised the current government for achieving the highest number of electric buses among any Indian city. He commended its commitment to zero tolerance for corruption, accountability, and digital transparency. Nabin also highlighted that the new bus fleet would contribute to reducing traffic congestion and curbing pollution, aligning with broader environmental goals.
This initiative reflects the BJP-led government's focus on sustainable development and public welfare, as it celebrates one year in office with tangible infrastructure improvements.
