Delhi Government Approves Major Drainage Overhaul to Combat Waterlogging
In a significant move to address chronic waterlogging issues, the Delhi government has sanctioned a substantial budget exceeding Rs 125 crore for the comprehensive remodelling of stormwater drains. This initiative targets nearly 28 kilometers of major road stretches in north Delhi, as announced by Water Minister Parvesh Verma on Tuesday.
Targeted Infrastructure Projects Under New Drainage Master Plan
The approved works encompass three critical projects designed to alleviate flooding along key sections of the Ring Road, which have historically suffered during monsoon seasons. The specific areas slated for improvement include Model Town-2 Road, Model Town-3 Road, Kushal Cinema Road, and the stretch from Azadpur H-Point to Mukarba Chowk along Mall Road Extension.
Minister Verma emphasized that this project represents a structured intervention aimed at resolving long-standing drainage problems in a holistic and thorough manner. By focusing on these high-traffic corridors, the government seeks to enhance urban resilience and improve commuter safety during heavy rainfall.
Expansion of Drainage Initiatives to Southern Delhi
In addition to the north Delhi projects, the Public Works Department has proposed a fresh round of drainage construction and remodelling works across several key arterial stretches under its southern roads division. This proposed initiative is valued at over Rs 35 crore and spans eight major road corridors.
The plan includes the construction and remodelling of the drainage system on JLN Marg, extending from Kamla Market rotary to Asaf Ali Road, as well as on Asaf Ali Road itself. Furthermore, it involves the remodelling of the existing drainage system on Boulevard Road, covering the section from St Stephen's Hospital to Bhagwan Dass Chowk on both sides.
These combined efforts underscore the Delhi government's commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure and mitigating waterlogging challenges across the capital. The projects are expected to significantly improve drainage efficiency and reduce flood risks in affected neighborhoods.
