Delhi LG Launches Major Project to Revive Sanjay Lake
Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, TS Sandhu, launched a major project under the 'Project Urban Horizon' (PUH) initiative to transform Sanjay Lake. The project aims to revive the lake's water bodies and plant 5,000 trees, significantly enhancing the area's biodiversity and providing a green recreational space for residents.
Project Details and Goals
The project, unveiled on June 25, 2026, focuses on restoring the ecological health of Sanjay Lake, which has faced degradation over the years. According to officials, the initiative includes desilting, deepening the lake, and constructing check dams to improve water retention. Additionally, 5,000 native tree species will be planted around the lake to create a lush green buffer zone.
"This project is a testament to our commitment to rejuvenate Delhi's water bodies and green spaces," said LG Sandhu during the launch. "Sanjay Lake will become a model for urban ecological restoration."
Impact on Biodiversity and Community
The revival is expected to attract migratory birds and local wildlife, boosting biodiversity. The project also includes walking trails, seating areas, and interpretive signage to educate visitors about the lake's ecosystem. Local residents have welcomed the move, hoping it will provide a much-needed escape from the city's hustle.
"We have been waiting for such an initiative," said a local resident. "The lake was dying, but now it will become a beautiful spot for families."
Timeline and Future Plans
The project is slated for completion by mid-2027, with the first phase focusing on water revival and tree plantation. Subsequent phases will develop amenities. The LG's office stated that similar projects are being planned for other water bodies in Delhi.
