Delhi Government Announces Major Road Revamp Project
In a significant infrastructure push, the Delhi government has unveiled plans to revamp 400 kilometers of road stretches across the capital by the end of this year. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made the announcement on Tuesday, detailing a comprehensive road improvement project aimed at enhancing urban mobility and safety.
Project Scope and Financial Details
Officials have identified more than 241 major roads for redevelopment under this initiative, with the total project cost pegged at Rs 802.18 crore. The funding structure includes Rs 643.36 crore from the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), while the Delhi government will contribute the remaining Rs 158.82 crore.
Wall-to-Wall Carpeting Model for Uniform Quality
Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that all roads will be developed using the wall-to-wall carpeting model. This approach ensures construction work is not partial but carried out across the full width of each road with uniform quality standards.
"The initiative is a significant step towards making the capital safer, more organised, and future-ready," Gupta stated. "Unlike the common practice of only repairing the central portion of roads or isolated potholes, which often result in deterioration after a short period, under the new system, entire stretches will be uniformly strengthened from edge to edge."
Technical Assessments and Long-Term Benefits
Each road will undergo a thorough technical assessment of the base layer, necessary strengthening, and proper drainage arrangements as per prescribed standards. This comprehensive methodology is expected to:
- Reduce waterlogging during the monsoon season
- Ensure long-term road safety and durability
- Enhance the lifespan of road infrastructure
- Minimize traffic disruption through phased implementation
Environmental and Public Health Advantages
The chief minister highlighted additional environmental benefits of the project. "A fully levelled and sealed surface across the complete width will lead to reduction in dust and air pollution," Gupta explained. "Damaged roads generate loose soil and fine particles that become airborne due to vehicular movement, contributing to pollution levels."
Timeline and Implementation Strategy
The ambitious project is targeted for completion by December 2024. Work will be undertaken in carefully planned phases to minimize public inconvenience and traffic disruptions. This strategic approach aims to balance infrastructure development with maintaining normal urban life in the capital.
This road revamp initiative represents one of Delhi's most substantial infrastructure investments in recent years, addressing both immediate transportation needs and long-term urban planning goals.
