Delhi's Electric Bus Fleet Surpasses 4,000 with Major 500-Bus Induction

Delhi has significantly bolstered its public transport infrastructure with the introduction of 500 new electric buses. This latest addition pushes the Delhi Transport Corporation's (DTC) electric bus fleet beyond the 4,000-unit threshold, solidifying the national capital's position as home to India's largest e-bus fleet, according to PTI reports.

Chief Minister Flags Off Landmark Fleet Expansion

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta officially flagged off the new buses on Sunday, describing the event as a landmark moment for Delhi. She emphasized that this marks the first instance where 500 electric buses have been integrated into the city's public transport network simultaneously. Gupta asserted that this achievement firmly establishes Delhi as the leading state in India in terms of electric bus adoption.

Features and Benefits of the New Buses

The newly inducted buses are low-floor, fully air-conditioned, and equipped with modern safety features, including panic buttons. Gupta highlighted that these vehicles will:

  • Enhance connectivity across the city
  • Play a crucial role in reducing air pollution
  • Offer commuters a safer and more comfortable travel experience

New Route and Future Expansion Plans

Transport Minister Pankaj Singh announced the launch of a new electric bus route connecting Delhi and Panipat, further extending the network's reach. Outlining the government's long-term vision, Chief Minister Gupta revealed ambitious expansion targets:

  1. Increase the electric bus fleet to 7,500 buses by the end of 2026
  2. Scale up to 14,000 electric buses by 2028

Visible Benefits and Future Initiatives

Gupta noted that the rapid deployment of electric buses over the past year has already yielded tangible benefits. The growing e-bus fleet has contributed to reduced pollution levels while providing residents with an affordable and reliable alternative to private transportation. She also addressed last-mile connectivity as a key focus area, mentioning that the government recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Bharat Taxi to tackle this challenge.
