Goa Announces Major Overhaul of Fire and Emergency Services Infrastructure
In a significant move to bolster public safety, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant declared on Tuesday that the state's fire services will soon be integrated with the 112 Emergency Response Support Systems (ERSS). This integration aims to streamline coordination and improve the efficiency of emergency responses across the region.
New Fire Stations and Enhanced Infrastructure
Addressing a gathering at the National Fire Service Day celebrations held at the directorate of fire and emergency services headquarters in Panaji, Sawant emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening fire and emergency services. "The government is dedicated to enhancing fire and emergency services throughout Goa. To ensure faster response times in remote areas, new fire stations are being established in Sanguem and Dharbandora," he stated.
The chief minister highlighted that strengthening infrastructure, improving coordination, and building capacity remain top priorities for the administration. As part of this initiative, zonal fire control rooms will be set up in all three districts of Goa to facilitate better coordination and operational efficiency.
Upgraded Training and Community Engagement
To further enhance capacity-building efforts, the existing training facility will be upgraded to a state fire training academy. This upgrade is expected to provide advanced training for firefighting personnel, equipping them with the skills needed to handle modern emergencies.
Sawant also noted the success of community-based programs such as 'Apada Mitra' and 'Apada Sakhi', which have increased public participation in disaster response. Additionally, awareness activities like drawing and essay competitions among students are being promoted to instill fire safety knowledge from a young age.
Recognition and Modern Equipment
During the celebrations, firefighting personnel were honored with commendation certificates for their exemplary service. In a notable achievement, Nitin Raikar, the director of fire and emergency services, was presented with his PhD degree.
The event also featured an exhibition showcasing advanced firefighting equipment and modern rescue tools, which were inaugurated to demonstrate the state's commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology for emergency management.
The program was attended by Chief Secretary V. Candavelou, senior officers, fire service personnel, and other dignitaries, underscoring the collective effort to improve Goa's emergency response capabilities.
