Goa Minister Announces NH 66 Four-Laning to Slash Travel Time and Fuel Canacona's Growth
In a significant announcement, Goa's Art and Culture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar revealed that the ongoing four-laning of National Highway 66 will dramatically reduce travel time between Margao and Canacona by 20 to 30 minutes upon completion. Speaking at the 'Sketches' event in Margao on Sunday evening, Tawadkar, who represents the Canacona constituency, emphasized that this infrastructure upgrade is poised to catalyze comprehensive development across the Canacona region.
Infrastructure Boost and Central Funding Details
The minister outlined that the project, which covers a 22.1-kilometer stretch from Bendordem to the Karnataka border at Polem, is being executed with central funding amounting to Rs 1,376 crore. This ambitious initiative encompasses the segment from Bendordem to the Canacona bypass and from the bypass to Polem. Tawadkar confidently stated that once finished, the enhanced highway will not only streamline connectivity but also spur improvements in critical sectors such as health and education, laying a robust foundation for Canacona's future growth.
Housing Initiative Success and Community Reconnection
Reflecting on his earlier efforts, Tawadkar shared insights into his Shram Dham programme, which focuses on constructing houses for the underprivileged. He acknowledged that the initiative faced initial criticism, with skeptics doubting its feasibility. However, he reported a resounding success, with over 70 houses already built or currently under construction. The minister elaborated that Shram Dham's core aim extends beyond mere shelter provision; it seeks to foster reconnection among neighbors and protect humanity, thereby strengthening community bonds in Canacona.
Fundraising Event for Special Education School
The 'Sketches' event, organized by Lokvishwas Prathishthan in collaboration with Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, served as a fundraising platform for educational initiatives at the only school for special children in Canacona. Chairman Anup Priolkar provided a detailed history of the institution, noting that its Canacona branch was established in 2009. Initially operating from a rented hall in Devbag provided by the Komarpant Samaj after relocating from Mokhard, the school is now set for a major upgrade. A generous donation of 1,000 square meters by the Prabhu family from Canacona is paving the way for the construction of a dedicated school building in the near future, promising enhanced facilities for special education.

Sunday's gathering centered on the sale of artworks by artist Yogesh Prabhugaonkar, with proceeds directed towards supporting Lokvishwas Prathishthan's school. This initiative underscores the community's commitment to leveraging cultural events for social causes.
