Haryana Minister Sets June 15 Deadline for Gurgaon Monsoon Preparedness Plan
In a decisive move to tackle seasonal flooding, Haryana's Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh has issued a strict directive to the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) to finalize a comprehensive monsoon preparedness plan before June 15. The instruction came during a high-level review meeting held at the PWD rest house on Monday, where the minister emphasized the urgency of proactive measures to prevent waterlogging and ensure public safety during the upcoming rainy season.
Focus on Critical Drainage Infrastructure
Minister Singh specifically instructed relevant departments to prioritize proper water drainage arrangements, with special attention to vulnerable areas including the Najafgarh drain region, Narsingpur, and zones surrounding the National Highway. He announced that a follow-up review meeting will be convened around June 15 to assess the progress of these preparations, ensuring accountability and timely execution.
During the meeting, officials from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) provided detailed updates on ongoing efforts. Work is currently underway at nine identified waterlogging hotspots across the city, alongside the cleaning of approximately 160 kilometers of surface drains to facilitate unobstructed water flow.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Hotspot Mitigation
Key infrastructure improvements are being implemented to enhance drainage efficiency. This includes lowering central verges and green belt areas below road level to allow smooth water passage. In Narsingpur, a temporary drain constructed last year is being upgraded into a permanent concrete structure, reflecting a shift from makeshift solutions to durable infrastructure.
Drain connectivity is also being strengthened at major intersections such as IFFCO Chowk, Signature Tower Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, and Hero Honda Chowk to prevent bottlenecks during heavy rainfall. Officials reported that 40 waterlogging hotspots have already been identified, with remediation work completed at most locations. The target is to address all remaining sites before the monsoon season commences.
Additional Civic Works and Environmental Measures
Efforts are also focused on improving connectivity in areas linked to the master drain system. Micro sewage treatment plants (STPs) installed in various city parks are fully operational, contributing to better wastewater management. The sewerage issue in the Rajendra Park area was discussed during the meeting, with assurances that the necessary work will be completed by the end of April.
Furthermore, the supply of treated water has been arranged for 142 parks in Gurgaon, with work progressing at remaining locations to promote sustainable water use in public spaces.
