Gurgaon's Islampur Underpass Transformed into Unauthorized Dumping Zone
In a significant civic lapse, the vehicular underpass at Islampur on Sohna Road in Gurgaon has been turned into an illegal dumping ground, creating severe problems for daily commuters. The area is now plagued by foul smells and extensive piles of garbage, disrupting traffic flow and posing health hazards.
Commuters Struggle with Foul Odors and Accumulated Waste
Originally constructed to facilitate local traffic movement across the corridor, this low-height underpass has become a hotspot for unauthorized waste disposal. Household rubbish is regularly dumped near the entry and exit points, leading to large accumulations that obstruct the pathway. Stray cattle and dogs are frequently observed scavenging through the waste, further scattering it and exacerbating the mess.
Residents have voiced strong concerns over the lack of enforcement to deter violators. They are calling for regular monitoring, immediate clearance of the waste, and the imposition of strict penalties to prevent future dumping incidents. "The underpass has effectively become an unofficial dumping site with zero oversight. The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) must deploy personnel and issue fines to those responsible. Without punitive measures, this issue will persist indefinitely," stated an anonymous resident from Sector 30.
Reduced Road Width and Traffic Disruptions
The dumping has significantly narrowed the usable width of the adjacent service road, which was already constrained. With garbage piled along the edges, vehicles are left with limited space to pass, and at times, waste spills onto the motorable portion, further restricting movement. Commuters report increased congestion and safety risks due to these conditions.
Vijay Shiv Nath, Chairman of the Malibu Residents' Welfare Association Federation and a frequent user of the stretch, criticized the situation as a reflection of poor civic management. "The accumulation of rubbish, sometimes spilling onto the road, is gradually narrowing the roadway, making it difficult for vehicles to navigate safely," Nath emphasized.
Official Response and Immediate Actions
In response to the growing complaints, Ravinder Yadav, Additional Commissioner of MCG, acknowledged the issue as unauthorized dumping and assured prompt action. "This is an illegal dumping activity. We will take immediate steps to clear the site and address the problem," Yadav declared. The statement highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for effective municipal intervention to restore order and hygiene in the area.
The ongoing neglect at the Islampur underpass underscores broader challenges in urban waste management and civic enforcement in Gurgaon, calling for sustained efforts to improve infrastructure and public health standards.
