Jamshedpur and Ranchi Enforce Mandatory Pet Dog Registration for Owners

In a significant move for urban pet management, authorities in Jamshedpur and Ranchi have mandated the registration of pet dogs with municipal bodies. This initiative aims to enhance public safety and administrative oversight across both cities.

Jamshedpur's Registration Drive by JNAC

Krishna Kumar, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC), has announced that all pet lovers in the city must register their dogs with the committee. The primary goal is to maintain an accurate record of pet dogs within JNAC's jurisdiction, while also generating additional revenue for the municipal body.

Dog owners are required to visit the JNAC office in person to complete the registration process, which involves a fee of Rs 100. During registration, comprehensive details must be provided, including the dog's breed, name, age, sex, and colour, as well as the owner's name, residential address, and Aadhaar card information. Additionally, owners must present a current anti-rabies vaccination certificate at the office.

Failure to comply with this registration requirement will result in penal action under the Jharkhand Municipal Act 2011, emphasizing the seriousness of this regulatory measure.

Ranchi's Ongoing Registration Efforts

Simultaneously, pet dog registration continues in Ranchi under the provisions established by the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC). Civic records from 2016 indicate that over 25,000 pet dogs were surveyed across the city, with approximately 1,500 currently registered with the corporation.

The registration process in Ranchi is facilitated through RMC's authorized agency, "Hope and Animals." An official from the agency reported that about five to six pet owners complete the registration process each month, highlighting a steady but ongoing effort to ensure compliance.

This dual-city approach underscores a broader trend in Jharkhand towards stricter animal control and urban planning, aiming to balance pet ownership with community welfare and municipal governance.
