First interfaith organ donation drive launched in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir on June 28, 2026, launched its first interfaith organ donation drive, designed to address and dispel religious misconceptions that have hindered organ donation in the region. The initiative brings together leaders from various faiths to promote the life-saving practice.

Religious leaders cite scriptures to support organ donation

Speaking at the launch, Dr Poonam Mahajan, a key organizer, emphasized that organ donation is widely regarded as a humanitarian act rather than one prohibited by faith. Referring to religious scriptures, she explained that all major religions support the concept of saving lives through donation.

The drive aims to counter myths that organ donation conflicts with religious beliefs. By engaging clergy and scholars from Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, and other faiths, organizers hope to build trust and encourage pledges.

Concrete goals and community engagement

The campaign targets registering at least 10,000 new organ donors within the first year. It includes workshops, mosque and temple announcements, and social media outreach. Local hospitals have pledged to facilitate the process.

According to Dr Mahajan, the drive is a response to the severe shortage of organs in the region, where over 500 patients are on waiting lists for kidneys, livers, and hearts. Many die annually due to lack of donations.

Impact and future plans

Organizers plan to expand the drive to all districts of Jammu and Kashmir. They will also train religious leaders as ambassadors to spread awareness. The initiative has received support from the state health department and non-governmental organizations.
