Kochi Power Crisis Looms as Consumption Spikes, KSEB Warns

Kochi Braces for Potential Power Outages as Electricity Demand Surges

Authorities at the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) in Kochi are raising alarms over escalating power consumption, which threatens to trigger widespread outages in the city in the near future. While KSEB has so far managed to avert blackouts through proactive measures, officials warn that a further spike in usage could precipitate a severe crisis.

Transformer Upgrades and Rising Consumer Demand

In response to the growing strain on the electrical grid, KSEB has replaced numerous 100kV and 160kV transformers across Kochi with higher-capacity units. This upgrade aims to handle the increased load, driven by a significant rise in the number of consumers using air-conditioners and electric vehicles (EVs) over the past few years. Peak consumption typically occurs between 6 PM and 12 midnight, when simultaneous use of ACs and EVs can cause a sudden, substantial surge in demand.

"When a large number of consumers activate ACs and EVs during evening hours, the collective load can overwhelm transformers, leading to failures and subsequent power outages," explained a KSEB official. "Drawing from past experiences, we have enhanced transformer capacities in key locations. However, the system remains vulnerable if consumption escalates further, particularly due to factors like increased use of induction cookers amid LPG shortages."

Recent Transformer Failures and Ongoing Challenges

In recent days, a couple of transformers in Kochi have already failed due to excessive power consumption. Despite the capacity enhancements, KSEB officials caution that a major surge could still trigger a crisis. "We have bolstered transformer capacities, so a crisis might be avoided unless there is a dramatic increase in usage," the official noted.

Compounding the issue are delays in critical infrastructure projects. Work on a feeder line from Edappally to Cheranellore, intended to alleviate power issues in those areas, has progressed only about 2.5 kilometers out of a total 6 kilometers. "We are accelerating efforts on this feeder line, but completion is essential to resolve local disruptions," added the official.

Feeder Line Hurdles and Alternative Solutions

Similarly, a feeder line project to the Vennala area faces obstacles, as the National Highway Authority of India has not granted permission for road digging to lay underground cables. In response, KSEB is pivoting to aerial bunched cables (ABC) for the feeder lines. "We plan to use ABC to expedite the laying process without significant delays. Once this work is finished, power disruptions in Vennala should be mitigated," stated KSEB officials.

The combination of upgraded transformers and pending feeder line projects underscores KSEB's efforts to stabilize Kochi's power supply. However, with consumption trends pointing upward, the city remains on edge, highlighting the urgent need for both infrastructure completion and consumer awareness to prevent potential blackouts.
