KSRTC Announces 15% Hike in Luggage Charges Across Karnataka

In a significant move affecting commuters, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has declared a 15% increase in luggage charges, set to take effect from Monday. This revision marks the first adjustment since December 2021 and will specifically apply to luggage that exceeds the free allowance limits.

Revised Luggage Policy and Free Allowance Details

Under the updated policy, adult passengers will continue to enjoy a free luggage allowance of 30 kilograms, while children are permitted 15 kilograms without any additional cost. However, any baggage surpassing these limits will now incur higher charges as per the new tariff structure.

The corporation has outlined a detailed stage-based charging system for excess luggage. For the initial five stages of a journey, where each stage corresponds to six kilometres, passengers will be charged Rs 6. As the distance increases, the charges escalate progressively, reaching a maximum of Rs 145 for stages 156 to 160.

Reasons Behind the Fare Adjustment

A KSRTC spokesperson explained that the decision to hike luggage charges is primarily driven by the continuous rise in operational expenses. "The increase in diesel prices, staff salaries, and other overhead costs have necessitated this adjustment," the spokesperson stated. "Historically, luggage fare revisions have aligned with bus fare hikes. Although bus fares were increased in January 2025, luggage charges remained unchanged until now. This update aims to balance our financial sustainability while maintaining service quality."

Impact on Passengers and Operational Context

This adjustment is expected to impact frequent travelers and those carrying heavy baggage, particularly in urban and intercity routes across Karnataka. The KSRTC emphasizes that the hike is essential to cover escalating costs without compromising on safety or efficiency.

Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, considering the revised charges for excess luggage. The corporation reassures that the free allowance remains intact to accommodate typical travel needs, with the hike targeting only surplus baggage.

As Karnataka's primary public transport provider, KSRTC's move reflects broader trends in the transportation sector, where fuel and operational expenses continue to influence fare structures. Commuters should stay informed about such updates to manage travel expenses effectively.
