In Kochi, the critical rectification of structural failures at the Kumbalam bridge along the NH 66 bypass is advancing at a painfully slow rate, despite intense public outcry and a troubling history of accidents. This lethargic progress has ensnared motorists in severe traffic congestion during peak hours, exacerbating daily commutes and raising significant safety alarms.
Delayed Timeline and Minimal Completion Frustrate Commuters
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) initially committed to a swift two-week resolution for the bridge issues. However, the project has now stretched beyond a month, with a mere 10% of the necessary work accomplished. This delay has left the approach roads on both sides compromised due to soil settlement, a geotechnical phenomenon where the underlying ground compresses over time, creating dangerous height discrepancies where the road meets the bridge structure.
Safety Incidents Trigger Repair Initiative
The repair efforts were launched following multiple accidents, including a particularly severe incident involving a passenger on a KSRTC bus. As the bus traversed the elevated section, a sudden impact caused by the uneven road surface threw the passenger from his seat, resulting in serious head injuries. This event underscored the urgent need for structural intervention to prevent further mishaps.
Local Authorities and Residents Voice Concerns
Razeena Salam, the president of Kumbalam panchayat, highlighted the severe delays, noting, "The rectification work has been severely delayed. They scraped off the asphalt in nearly half of the portions of the approach road before suspending the works. This resulted in severe congestion during peak hours." Additionally, abandoned construction materials on the bridge have narrowed the passage, intensifying traffic bottlenecks during busy periods.
While some progress is being made in the Aroor-Madavana direction, residents are clamoring for immediate action on the opposite stretch, Madavana-Aroor. Rahul T J, a local resident, pointed out, "There is an uneven slope issue at the entry point of Madavana-Aroor direction as well. There are chances of mishaps as vehicles speeding past Madavana Junction hit the abrupt transitions."
NHAI Response and Future Plans
When contacted, a senior NHAI official assured that the work would be expedited and completed by the end of the month. Beyond these immediate patchwork repairs, NHAI has proposed a comprehensive structural study by RITES to identify a permanent solution to the recurring settlement problems plaguing the bypass. This long-term approach aims to address the root causes and enhance the durability of the infrastructure.
