MCD Unveils Comprehensive Desilting Strategy to Tackle Monsoon Waterlogging in Delhi
In a proactive move to address the perennial issue of waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has formulated a detailed action plan for large-scale desilting of drains across the city. This initiative aims to ensure smoother drainage and prevent disruptions on urban roads.
Commissioner Directs Early Implementation of Desilting Work
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar has issued directives to officials to expedite the process by issuing work orders for desilting drains that are deeper than 4 feet this month. Khirwar emphasized that zonal offices were instructed to commence issuing work orders as early as February, citing that in-principle approvals and financial allocations had already been secured. This early start is intended to optimize preparedness before the monsoon rains intensify.
Financial Allocation and Phased Completion Targets
The corporation has earmarked a substantial budget of Rs 36 crore for this extensive desilting project, which encompasses approximately 800 drains. The operation is structured into two phases: Phase I is scheduled for completion by June 15, aligning with the onset of the monsoon, while Phase II will conclude by December 31. According to an official letter released by the additional commissioner last week, funds have been specifically allocated for desilting 793 drains, covering a total stretch of about 545 kilometers.
Strict Supervision and Documentation Protocols
To ensure accountability and efficiency, the MCD has mandated that the entire desilting operation be closely supervised by deputy commissioners. Proper documentation is compulsory throughout the process to maintain transparency and track progress. Additionally, the civic body has established rigorous norms for debris disposal, requiring that silt removed from drains be cleared within a strict timeframe of 3 to 5 days to prevent secondary environmental issues.
Citizen Engagement and Feedback Mechanism
In a bid to foster community involvement, the MCD has designated two specific days for citizens and stakeholders to submit feedback regarding clogged drains. This participatory approach aims to enhance the effectiveness of the desilting efforts by incorporating local insights and addressing specific problem areas promptly.
By implementing this comprehensive plan, the MCD seeks to mitigate waterlogging challenges, thereby improving urban mobility and public safety during the monsoon season in Delhi.
