MoD Clarifies Engraving of Six Martyrs' Names at National War Memorial
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has clarified that the names of six soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during Operation Sindoor were engraved at the National War Memorial following the established due process. The clarification came amid queries about the inclusion of these names at the memorial, which honours India's fallen soldiers.
According to an official statement from the MoD, the then Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) had paid solemn tribute to these brave soldiers during a press conference on May 11, 2025. The DGMO specifically acknowledged their sacrifice in the line of duty during Operation Sindoor, a military operation conducted by the Indian Armed Forces.
Background of Operation Sindoor and the Tribute
Operation Sindoor was a significant military campaign, and the six soldiers lost their lives while serving the nation. The MoD emphasized that the process for including names at the National War Memorial involves strict verification and approval protocols to ensure that only those who have made the ultimate sacrifice are honoured. The ministry's statement reaffirmed that all necessary procedures were followed in this case.
The National War Memorial, located in New Delhi, is a sacred site that commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who have died in various conflicts and operations since independence. The addition of new names is done with full military honours and in accordance with the guidelines set by the armed forces.
Government's Commitment to Honouring Martyrs
The MoD's clarification underscores the government's commitment to respecting and remembering the sacrifices of the armed forces personnel. The tribute paid by the DGMO on May 11, 2025, was part of the formal recognition of the soldiers' valour. The ministry also noted that the families of the martyrs have been informed and included in the honouring process.
This development comes as part of ongoing efforts to ensure that the sacrifices of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force are never forgotten. The National War Memorial serves as a permanent reminder of the nation's gratitude to its defenders.
