The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai is set to revamp its premium bus fleet by introducing a two-class seating system, akin to the premium and economy sections found on aircraft. Under the proposed plan, the front half of the bus will retain premium amenities such as cushioned seats, free Wi-Fi, and pre-booking options, while the rear half will offer regular seats on an air-conditioned bus that can be boarded without a reservation.
Current Premium Bus Operations
MTC launched its premium bus service in March 2025 on two routes: route no. 91 connecting Kilambakkam and Tiruvanmiyur, and route no. 570S linking CMBT with Siruseri IT Park. Currently, nine premium buses operate on these routes, primarily catering to IT professionals commuting to work. Fares range from ₹50 to ₹150. However, the service has faced criticism on social media, earning the nickname 'aavi' (ghost) bus due to frequent near-empty trips on busy routes, as seats can only be pre-booked.
Design Changes and Approval
A senior MTC official stated that the entire interior of the fleet needs to be redesigned to split the bus into two segments. This redesign requires approval and certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). “A design proposal has been sent to ARAI in this regard,” the official added. If approved, commuters will be able to board the premium bus on the go and purchase a regular AC bus fare (₹15-₹80) to travel in the rear half. The front half, with cushioned seats and Wi-Fi, will remain reserved for premium fare passengers. No standees will be allowed. “Even after boarding the bus, the commuter can decide if they want to travel premium or economy and switch,” MTC officials added.
Future Expansion Plans
MTC also plans to extend the premium-economy concept to its entire AC bus fleet of 225 buses if the pilot is well-received by commuters. This initiative aims to increase occupancy and improve service efficiency.
