Nagpur Fire Data Highlights Summer as Peak Risk Season for Blazes
Data from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's fire and emergency services department reveals that the summer quarter of March to May is the most vulnerable period for fire incidents across the city, both in terms of frequency and property loss.
High Frequency of Fire Calls During Summer Months
Within city limits, the department attended a total of 867 fire calls between April 2025 and March 2026. A significant concentration of these incidents was recorded during the summer stretch. March alone saw 160 fire calls, the highest for any month, while April reported 155 calls and May had 88 calls, indicating elevated numbers during this period.
Substantial Property Losses in Peak Months
This period also witnessed heavy financial damage. April recorded property losses of 5.48 crore rupees, while May topped the chart with 7.21 crore rupees in losses. March, despite having the highest number of calls, reported comparatively lower losses of 1.92 crore rupees, suggesting that many incidents were contained in time. Overall, fire incidents within city limits resulted in property losses worth 85.35 crore rupees, even as the department managed to save assets valued at 70.11 crore rupees.
Incidents Beyond Urban Limits
Outside city limits, the department responded to 44 fire calls, where properties worth 56.35 crore rupees were gutted, while assets valued at 37.34 crore rupees were saved. This indicates that significant losses are not confined to urban areas alone, with rural and suburban zones also facing substantial fire risks.
Seasonal Patterns and Major Fire Contributions
While smaller fires dominate the overall numbers, major and medium fires during the peak summer months contribute disproportionately to losses. In contrast, monsoon and winter months recorded relatively fewer incidents, underlining the seasonal nature of fire risks in the region.
Improved Response and Safety Measures
The report also shows no fatalities in fire incidents within city limits, pointing towards improved response time and evacuation efficiency. However, the recurring spike during March-May underscores the need for targeted fire safety measures ahead of summer, especially as the city's understaffed fire department continues to shoulder a growing burden.
Challenges and Commendable Efforts
With National Fire Service Day observed on April 14, the data highlights not just the scale of challenges but also the efforts of the fire department. Despite a severe manpower crunch—with a sanctioned strength of 872 personnel but only 120 posts filled—the department has continued to deliver a commendable response, preventing further escalation in several major incidents.
