Nagpur Road Project Pauses, Leaving Hazardous Patches

Nagpur Road Concretisation Project Halted, Creating Hazardous Conditions

A major road improvement initiative in Nagpur has unexpectedly stalled, transforming what was meant to be a smoother commute into a dangerous obstacle course for residents. The project, which aims to concretise the roadway from Laxmi Bhavan Square to Gokulpeth Market in the Dharampeth area, has left behind uneven patches filled with loose gravel and rocky debris. These hazardous sections are now causing frequent minor accidents, particularly for two-wheeler riders, and contributing to significant traffic congestion.

Unfinished Sections Pose Serious Safety Risks

While substantial portions of the road have been successfully upgraded, critical areas near Laxmi Bhavan Square and the Gokulpeth fruit market remain incomplete. The abrupt transitions between the finished concrete and these rough patches have become accident hotspots. Local shopkeeper Kamlesh, who operates at Laxmi Bhavan Square, reported witnessing numerous moped riders lose their balance and fall. "Recently, a youngster fell from his scooter here," Kamlesh stated, highlighting the immediate danger.

A fruit vendor in the area explained the mechanics of the hazard: "As the patch is not visible from far, two-wheeler riders driving at the usual speed have to apply sudden brakes at these spots resulting in skidding or losing balance." The vendor added that the uneven terrain forces fruit cart operators to take longer alternative routes, as their heavy carts cannot navigate the unstable surfaces safely.

Broader Infrastructure Issues Compounding Problems

The road's condition is not the only concern. A roadside vendor pointed out that unfinished footpaths and exposed drainage pits have been left unattended for months. "They have left the footpath work incomplete with the construction debris lying all over it. With footpaths inaccessible, many are putting their carts on roads," the vendor said. This situation is further aggravated by stray animals frequently falling into the open drainage pits, creating additional hazards and sanitation issues.

Official Explanation: Awaiting 'Healthy Footpath' Decision

According to a senior official from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the construction halt is due to a pending administrative decision regarding a new 'healthy footpath' concept. The official clarified that the project cannot fully resume until this innovative design is finalised. While acknowledging the safety concerns, the official noted that only temporary arrangements can be made to mitigate risks until the overarching design approval is secured.

Local residents and business owners have expressed growing frustration over the slow pace of the work and the prolonged inconvenience. The combination of unfinished road sections, inaccessible footpaths, and open drains has significantly disrupted daily life and commerce in the area, turning a well-intentioned infrastructure project into a source of public safety anxiety and traffic chaos.
