Nashik Expands Ghat Infrastructure for Simhastha Kumbh 2027 with 12 New Ghats

The Nashik Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) has embarked on a major infrastructure project to construct 12 new ghats along the Godavari River in preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027. This initiative includes 10 ghats in Nashik city and two in Trimbakeshwar, all equipped with comprehensive facilities designed to accommodate pilgrims efficiently and safely.

Strategic Expansion to Enhance Pilgrim Experience

Shekhar Singh, Commissioner of NTKMA, emphasized the critical role of ghats in the Kumbh Mela, stating, "The ghats are where Simhastha actually happens. Every other piece of infrastructure — the roads, the parking, the health facilities — exists to bring the pilgrim safely to the ghat and back. We are expanding and upgrading the ghats on both sides of the Godavari to ensure that the scale of Simhastha 2027 is matched by the infrastructure on the ground." This expansion aims to significantly increase the bathing and ritual space available, thereby reducing crowding and ensuring a steady flow of pilgrims during the event.

Comprehensive Design and Facilities

A senior officer from NTKMA detailed the design features, noting that the new ghats will not merely be open spaces but will include:

  • Well-defined holding capacities for pilgrims
  • Police chowkis and watchtowers for security
  • Dedicated entry-exit routes and emergency access
  • Parking connectivity for convenience
  • Changing rooms and sanitation facilities
  • Enhanced lighting for safety

Additionally, a standardized naming and boundary system is being established across all ghats to facilitate seamless coordination between various departments during the mela.

Project Execution and Financial Details

The construction work is being carried out by a collaboration of the Nashik Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC), and the Water Resources Department (WRD). The project is scheduled for completion well before the commencement of the 2027 Kumbh Mela.

In Nashik city, the 10 new ghats will add a total length of 3,451 meters at a cost of Rs 361 crore, expanding the total number of ghats to 20 and covering approximately nine kilometers along the river. The specific ghats under construction in Nashik are:
