Goa's New 30MLD Water Treatment Plant Set to Transform Pernem's Water Supply
Senior officials from the drinking water department, led by the chief engineer, recently conducted a final site inspection of the 30 million liters per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Tuem in Goa. This critical infrastructure project is scheduled for a high-profile inauguration on April 30, marking a significant milestone in addressing Pernem's long-standing drinking water challenges.
Project Details and Timeline
Authorities have issued a strict fortnight-long deadline to complete all remaining civil and electrical works as the project approaches its final stages. Developed by Geo Miller & Co at a tender cost of Rs 65 crore, the facility is engineered to provide a reliable 24-hour water supply, substantially exceeding the current local demand of 14 MLD.
This summer is anticipated to be the final season of acute drinking water shortages for residents across the Mandrem and Pernem regions. Following the inspection, officials confirmed that a comprehensive five-year operation and maintenance contract has been secured, ensuring the project's long-term sustainability and operational efficiency for the entire taluka.
Addressing Water Scarcity and Supporting Growth
Currently, the entire Pernem taluka depends on a single water treatment plant located at Chandel. The rapid growth of tourism along Pernem's picturesque coastline, including popular beaches such as Ashvem, Mandrem, and Morjim, has placed immense strain on the existing water supply capacity. This has led to frequent shortages, which become particularly severe during the summer months, affecting both residents and visitors.
The new plant's surplus capacity is strategically allocated to support future development projects, including the upcoming Tuem Electronic City, the Tuem Industrial Estate, and the Central Security Force campus. Beyond meeting residential needs, this project represents a vital infrastructure boost for the coastal tourism belt, which has historically faced supply gaps during peak tourist seasons.
Key Benefits of the New Water Treatment Plant:
- Elimination of acute summer water shortages in Pernem and Mandrem regions.
- Provision of a 24-hour reliable water supply, exceeding current demand.
- Support for tourism growth and economic development in coastal areas.
- Infrastructure readiness for upcoming industrial and electronic city projects.
- Enhanced water security through a dedicated five-year maintenance contract.
The inauguration of this plant on April 30 is poised to bring a new era of water security and prosperity to Pernem, transforming the lives of residents and bolstering the region's economic vitality.
