Massive Security Deployment for NEET-UG 2026 Re-exam
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced unprecedented security measures for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21. According to an official statement, a total of 87,243 personnel have been deployed specifically for candidate verification, including 38,795 frisking staff and 48,448 biometric verification personnel. This marks the largest security operation ever mounted for a single-day medical entrance exam in India.
Enhanced Candidate Verification Process
The NTA stated that the re-exam will feature multi-layered identity checks at all 1,287 examination centers across the country. Each candidate will undergo both physical frisking and biometric authentication before being allowed into the exam hall. The biometric verification includes fingerprint scanning and facial recognition technology to prevent impersonation. According to NTA Director General Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh, "This level of deployment is unprecedented and reflects our commitment to ensure a fair and transparent examination process."
Background and Rationale
The re-examination was ordered following reports of irregularities in the original NEET-UG 2026 exam held in May. The Supreme Court had directed the NTA to conduct a fresh test for affected candidates after a petition alleged question paper leaks and impersonation. Over 2.3 million candidates had registered for the original exam, but only those whose centers were flagged for irregularities will appear in the re-exam. The NTA expects approximately 180,000 candidates to take the test on June 21.
Logistical Arrangements
In addition to the verification staff, the NTA has deployed 15,000 invigilators and 3,500 center supervisors. CCTV surveillance has been installed in all exam halls, and jammers have been placed to block mobile signals. The exam will be conducted in two shifts, with the first shift from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and the second from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. Candidates have been advised to report at least two hours early to allow for the enhanced security checks.
Impact and Reactions
The security measures have been welcomed by student groups and parents. A candidate from Delhi, Priya Sharma, said, "After the leaks in the first exam, it's reassuring to see such strict security. We just want a fair chance." However, some have raised concerns about the time required for verification. The NTA has assured that the process will be streamlined to minimize delays. The results of the re-exam are expected to be announced within two weeks, according to the agency.
