Farmers in Tarn Taran staged a protest on June 29, 2026, burning an effigy of the administration in front of the Powercom circle office. The protest was against poor power supply and the lack of water in canals, which they say is destroying their crops.
Protest Details
District president of a farmers' organisation, Pargat Singh Mehndipur, addressed the gathering, stating that farmers are not receiving the promised eight hours of power supply nor adequate canal water. He added that crops are being destroyed due to waterlogging, causing huge losses.
Other leaders, including Balbir Singh, Amritpal Singh, and Satnam Singh, also spoke at the event. They demanded eight hours of uninterrupted power supply and full water in canals to prevent further agricultural damage.
Impact on Agriculture
The protest highlights the ongoing crisis in the region, where farmers rely on consistent power for irrigation and canal water for their fields. The lack of these essentials has led to crop destruction and financial distress. The effigy burning symbolises their frustration with the administration's failure to address these issues.
Farmers' Demands
The key demands include: eight hours of uninterrupted power supply, full water in canals, and measures to prevent waterlogging. The farmers warned of intensified protests if their demands are not met.
