Union flags non-compliance with reservation rules
The Government Teachers’ Union has urged the Punjab government to revise its recent recruitment advertisement for 1,013 lecturer posts, claiming it does not adhere to the state’s reservation policy. In a letter to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, union leaders highlighted that the notification overlooks mandatory provisions for reserved categories, potentially denying them due representation.
Key leaders raise concerns
The letter was signed by union state president Sukhwinder Singh, general secretary Gurbinder Singh Saskaur, finance secretary Manohar Lal Sharma, and press secretary Karnail Phillaur. They argued that this is the first major recruitment drive by the current government for the School Education Department, yet the advertisement was issued without fully implementing prescribed reservation norms.
Potential legal challenges
The union warned that if the notification is challenged in court over these alleged lapses, the recruitment process could face significant delays, affecting appointments to lecturer posts. They urged the government to immediately rectify the advertisement to ensure all eligible reserved categories receive their rightful representation and to prevent any legal hurdles that could stall the process.
Demand for compliance with Punjab’s reservation policy
The union emphasized that the advertisement must align with the Punjab Government’s reservation rules to avoid discrimination and ensure fairness. They called for a revised notification that guarantees due representation for scheduled castes, backward classes, and other reserved categories as per state policy.
