With barely one and a half months remaining until the anticipated onset of the monsoon season, the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation has decided to significantly intensify its pre-monsoon preparedness initiatives. The primary focus is on identifying and systematically removing trees that pose a potential threat to human life and public property across the city.
High-Level Coordination Meeting Scheduled
The civic body will convene a crucial high-level coordination meeting this Friday. This meeting will bring together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Kerala Road Fund Board, Smart City officials, the Fire and Rescue Services department, and the Kerala State Electricity Board. The agenda is comprehensive, aiming to streamline several critical areas.
The meeting will concentrate on:

- Executing the urgent felling or pruning of trees identified as dangerous.
Immediate Field-Level Action Planned
According to Pattoor Radhakrishnan, the chairperson of the corporation's town planning standing committee, field-level action is planned to commence from Saturday. "Trees that have been identified as dangerous will be removed on a priority basis," Radhakrishnan stated, emphasizing the proactive approach.

The urgency of this pre-monsoon drive was starkly underscored by a concerning incident on Monday afternoon. A large tree suddenly collapsed on the premises of the Secretariat near the Cantonment Gate. The unexpected fall triggered significant panic among staff and visitors present at the high-security zone. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.
However, the collapse caused substantial disruption, with traffic along the affected route being halted for approximately three hours. Fire and rescue personnel from the Chenkalchoola station responded swiftly to the scene. Using chainsaws, they efficiently cleared the fallen tree, restoring normalcy and preventing further disruption.

Officials investigating the Secretariat incident noted that the tree appeared to have been weakened, likely due to internal decay or underlying soil instability.
