Trichy Railway Approves Twin Subways to Ease Traffic Congestion

Trichy Railway Division Greenlights Twin Subway Project to Replace Critical Level Crossing

In a significant infrastructure development, Southern Railway's Trichy division has officially approved the construction of two precast limited-use subways. These subways are designed to replace the Sanjeevi Nagar manned level crossing located near Trichy Town railway station. This strategic move is anticipated to substantially ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity between the Rockfort areas and the crucial Trichy–Chennai National Highway (NH).

Immediate Construction Efforts Underway

Work on the first subway has already commenced under the supervision of Southern Railway's dedicated construction wing. The second subway project is scheduled to be taken up imminently by the Trichy division itself, ensuring a coordinated and efficient execution of this vital public works initiative.

The Critical Role of Level Crossing 250

Level crossing 250, strategically positioned between Srirangam and Trichy Town stations at the end of the platforms, serves as an indispensable link for local commuters. It is heavily utilized by two-wheelers, cars, and autorickshaws traveling between Sanjeevi Nagar on the Trichy–Chennai NH and key destinations including East Boulevard Road, Rockfort, and the Chathiram bus stand areas.

Persistent public demand for a proper subway solution had been raised by residents and public representatives for years. Notable among them was Trichy MP Durai Vaiko, whose advocacy played a pivotal role in prompting the railways to initiate this long-awaited project. The frequent closures of the level crossing for train movements have historically forced commuters to endure longer, more congested alternative routes through the city, highlighting the urgent need for this infrastructure upgrade.

Project Specifications and Technical Details

The project involves the construction of two box-type limited-use subways, which will effectively bypass the existing manned crossing equipped with an electric barrier. One subway will be dedicated to handling inbound traffic, while the other will manage outbound vehicular movement between Sanjeevi Nagar and East Boulevard Road near Trichy Town station.

Each precast subway structure will have the following dimensions:

  • Length: 18 metres
  • Width: 3 metres
  • Height: 2.5 metres

A railway official provided further insight, stating, "Work for one of the two precast structures is currently underway. A retaining wall will be constructed along with a drain canal passing near the level crossing to prevent any potential seepage issues."

Collaboration and Swift Implementation

In a collaborative effort, the Trichy Corporation has been formally requested to divert an existing drain that runs in close proximity to the railway tracks. This coordination is essential for the seamless execution of the subway project. Railway sources have indicated that once the precast units are fully prepared, necessary railway line blocks will be announced. The installation process for these subways is expected to be remarkably swift, with completion projected in less than two days following the line blocks.

Current Project Status Summary

  1. First Precast Subway: Construction is actively under way, managed by the Railways' Construction Wing.
  2. Second Precast Subway: Work is slated to begin shortly, to be handled directly by the Trichy Division.

This twin subway initiative represents a proactive step by Southern Railway to address chronic traffic bottlenecks and enhance urban mobility in Trichy, responding directly to the needs of the local community and commuters.
