Tripura Government Implements Comprehensive Stray Animal Control Measures

The Tripura government has officially launched a coordinated initiative under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules of 2023 to tackle issues related to stray dogs and other animals, in strict adherence to Supreme Court directives. This move aims to enhance public safety, promote animal welfare, and ensure sustainable population control across the state.

Multi-Department Strategy for Animal Management

Deepa D Nair, Secretary of the Animal Resources Development Department, announced a comprehensive multi-department plan that integrates efforts from municipal and local authorities. The strategy focuses on mandatory sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs, alongside the establishment of dedicated animal birth control centres and shelters.

Key infrastructure developments include the inauguration of an animal birth control centre in Hapania by the Agartala Municipal Corporation and an operational animal shelter in R K Nagar. Similar facilities are being developed in other municipal areas through collaborations with animal welfare organizations to expand coverage and effectiveness.

Enhanced Monitoring and Response Systems

To ensure effective implementation, nodal officers have been deployed at sensitive high-traffic locations such as schools, hospitals, bus terminals, and railway stations. The state has also introduced continuous surveillance and rapid response systems along national highways to manage stray animals and address highway safety concerns promptly.

Stray animals found on highways will be relocated to designated shelters and cowsheds, where they will receive food, water, and veterinary support. Dedicated helplines have been established for the public to report stray animal-related issues, facilitating quicker interventions.

Awareness and Training Initiatives

The government is conducting extensive awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to educate students on stray animal behaviour, disease prevention, and basic first aid. Additionally, infrastructure for stray animal management is being expanded, and specialized training programmes are being organized for workers to enhance their skills in handling and caring for animals.

This holistic approach underscores Tripura's commitment to balancing public safety with animal welfare, setting a precedent for other states to follow in managing stray animal populations effectively.
