The Panchayati Raj Ministry has proposed a new initiative to assign unique codes and digital maps to every internal road in Indian villages. The Intra-Village Road Coding and Grading System aims to create a standardized framework for naming, coding, and digitally mapping all internal village roads, enhancing infrastructure management and planning.
Standardized Framework for Rural Roads
Under the proposed system, each village road will receive a unique identifier, making it easier to track maintenance, allocate funds, and integrate with broader rural development schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The digital mapping component will use geospatial technology to create accurate records of road networks, including length, condition, and connectivity.
Benefits of the System
- Improved Planning: Unique coding allows for better prioritization of road upgrades and repairs based on usage and condition.
- Transparency: Digital maps provide a clear record of road assets, reducing disputes and enabling efficient fund utilization.
- Integration: The system can be linked with other government databases, such as those for rural housing or electrification, to support holistic development.
Implementation Roadmap
The Ministry plans to pilot the system in select districts before nationwide rollout. Local panchayats will be trained to update and maintain the digital records. The initiative aligns with the government's push for digital governance and smart village development.
The proposal is currently under review, with stakeholders including state governments and rural development agencies invited to provide feedback. Once finalized, the system could revolutionize rural infrastructure management, making village roads more accountable and easier to maintain.
