Upa Lokayukta inspects BRIMS, finds severe shortcomings
Karnataka Upa Lokayukta Justice B Veerappa on Monday conducted a surprise inspection of Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) and expressed strong displeasure over the poor state of facilities at the hospital. He directed the authorities to immediately rectify the deficiencies and ensure proper maintenance.
During the inspection, Veerappa noted that the hospital lacked basic amenities such as clean drinking water, functional toilets, and adequate lighting in several wards. He also found that some medical equipment was not in working condition and that the outpatient department was overcrowded and poorly managed.
Rs 14 crore annual grant questioned
Veerappa lamented that despite receiving Rs 14 crore from the government every year, BRIMS has failed to provide even fundamental facilities to patients. He questioned the utilisation of funds and demanded a detailed report on expenditure. “It is unacceptable that a medical institute getting such a large sum cannot ensure basic hygiene and patient care,” he said.
The Upa Lokayukta also pointed out that the hospital’s emergency services were inadequate and that there were delays in attending to critical patients. He warned the authorities of strict action if improvements were not made within a month.
Authorities promise swift action
In response, BRIMS director Dr. Shashidhar Mugadlimath assured the Upa Lokayukta that a comprehensive action plan would be drawn up to address all grievances. He said that funds would be reallocated to priority areas and that a committee would monitor progress weekly.
Veerappa also instructed the district health officer to conduct regular inspections and submit compliance reports. He said that the Upa Lokayukta office would follow up on the matter and conduct another surprise visit soon.
