VB G Ram G Act in Force: National Wage Increases

New Wage Law Takes Effect

The VB G Ram G Act came into force from today, July 1, 2026, marking a significant shift in India's labor landscape. The act, which was passed by Parliament last year, aims to ensure fair wages for workers across all sectors. According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the national average wage has been increased by 15% to ₹25,000 per month under the new law.

Key Provisions of the Act

The VB G Ram G Act consolidates and amends the laws relating to wages and bonus payments. It introduces a universal minimum wage that applies to all employees, regardless of the sector. The act also mandates timely payment of wages and prohibits discrimination in wage rates on the basis of gender. "This is a historic step towards ensuring social justice for workers," said a senior official from the Ministry of Labour.

Impact on Workers and Employers

The wage increase is expected to benefit approximately 50 crore workers in the organized and unorganized sectors. Employers will now have to comply with the new wage structure, which includes a floor wage that states can adjust based on regional conditions. The government has set up a mechanism to monitor compliance and penalize violations. "The act will reduce income inequality and boost consumer spending," added the official.

Implementation Challenges

While the act is hailed as progressive, implementation challenges remain. Many small and medium enterprises may struggle with the increased labor costs. However, the government has assured support through skill development programs and tax incentives. The act also provides for a grievance redressal system to address disputes.

Historical Context

The VB G Ram G Act replaces four existing labor laws: the Payment of Wages Act, 1936; the Minimum Wages Act, 1948; the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965; and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976. This consolidation is part of the government's broader labor reform agenda to simplify compliance and promote ease of doing business.
