Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's government in Uttar Pradesh launched the Panchamrit Yojana, an innovative agricultural scheme aimed at increasing sugarcane farmers' income through scientific cultivation, reduced production costs, improved soil health, and higher productivity. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of doubling farmers' income.
Addressing Key Challenges
Uttar Pradesh, India's largest sugarcane-producing state, relies heavily on millions of farmers dependent on this crop. However, they face issues like rising input costs, declining soil fertility, water scarcity, and fluctuating yields. The Panchamrit Yojana promotes five modern and cost-effective farming practices to tackle these problems.
The Five Components of Panchamrit Yojana
1. Trench Method of Sugarcane Planting
Sugarcane is planted in trenches rather than flat land, improving root development, enhancing water retention, and increasing crop productivity.
2. Ratoon Management
Scientific management of ratoon crops (subsequent crops from harvested stubble) reduces replanting costs and improves yield from these crops.
3. Trash Mulching
Spreading sugarcane leaves and residues over the field conserves soil moisture, suppresses weed growth, and boosts soil organic matter and fertility.
4. Drip Irrigation
This efficient water-use technology delivers water directly to plant roots, saving water and fertilizer, especially in water-stressed regions.
5. Intercropping (Co-Cropping)
Growing additional crops between sugarcane rows generates supplementary income, improves land-use efficiency, and reduces risks from single-crop dependence.
Objectives of the Scheme
- Increase sugarcane productivity.
- Reduce cultivation costs.
- Improve farmers' profitability.
- Enhance soil fertility and sustainability.
- Promote water conservation.
- Encourage adoption of modern agricultural technologies.
- Generate additional income through intercropping.
- Contribute to doubling farmers' income.
Execution and Support
The Sugarcane Development Department identified progressive farmers and established demonstration plots to showcase Panchamrit techniques. Initially, over 2,000 farmers were selected for model farms, serving as learning centers. The government provides technical guidance, training programs, field demonstrations, and extension support through sugarcane development agencies.
Benefits
To Farmers
- Higher sugarcane yields.
- Lower expenditure on irrigation and inputs.
- Additional earnings through intercrops.
- Better resilience against climate variability.
For Agriculture
- Improved soil health.
- Reduced crop residue burning.
- Greater water-use efficiency.
- Sustainable farming practices.
For the State Economy
- Increased sugarcane production.
- Stronger sugar industry.
- Higher rural incomes.
- Enhanced agricultural growth.
Significance for Uttar Pradesh
As India's leading sugarcane producer, Uttar Pradesh's rural economy is closely tied to this crop. Panchamrit Yojana transforms conventional farming into a more profitable, technology-driven, and sustainable enterprise. By combining productivity enhancement with environmental conservation, the scheme represents a major step toward agricultural modernization in the state.
Panchamrit Yojana is a farmer-centric initiative focusing on scientific sugarcane cultivation through five integrated techniques: trench planting, ratoon management, trash mulching, drip irrigation, and intercropping. By reducing costs, improving productivity, conserving resources, and promoting sustainable agriculture, the scheme aims to substantially enhance the income and livelihoods of sugarcane farmers across Uttar Pradesh.
