Punjab Rolls Out Digital Ticketing for State Buses

Punjab Government Approves Digital Ticketing Machines for State-Run Buses

The Punjab government has given its approval for a major upgrade to the state's public transport system. A proposal to procure digital electronic ticketing machines for all state-run bus services has been cleared. This move aims to modernize the commuting experience for millions of passengers across Punjab.

Multiple Payment Options and Live Tracking

Commuters will now enjoy a variety of digital payment methods when buying bus tickets. The new machines will accept QR code-based payments, UPI transactions, and card-enabled payments. Offline payment modes will also remain available for those who prefer them.

These ticketing machines come equipped with GPS technology. This feature allows for live tracking of buses on their routes. Passengers can see the real-time location of their bus, view nearby bus stops, and get updated information on available services. Checking seat availability before boarding will become a simple task, helping people plan their journeys more efficiently.

Focus on Passenger Convenience and Smart Cards

Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar emphasized the system's design to minimize waiting times and reduce cash dependency. He stated that the goal is to ensure a smoother travel experience for all passengers, whether they are traveling on urban or rural routes.

"A key feature of the new ticketing system is its focus on passenger convenience and journey planning," Bhullar said.

The government's free bus travel scheme for women will continue without any interruption. Women passengers will receive smart cards to avail free travel seamlessly. Students will also be provided with smart cards, which can be recharged online through a dedicated mobile application. This initiative makes daily travel more accessible and affordable for young people across the state.

The introduction of a smart card ecosystem will benefit both citizens and tourists. These cards can be recharged digitally via a mobile app, reflecting the government's effort to integrate public transport with modern digital infrastructure.

Administrative Benefits and Future Plans

From an administrative standpoint, the digital electronic ticketing machines are expected to significantly strengthen the Transport Department's operations. Real-time monitoring of ticket sales and bus movements will enhance revenue transparency. It will also reduce manual intervention and improve overall accountability.

The availability of accurate digital data will support better planning and informed decision-making. More efficient deployment of buses will become possible, enabling the expansion of services. This could include adding more vehicles to the existing fleet to meet growing demand.

"The digital system will provide a hassle-free experience to commuters while improving the efficiency of our transport network," Bhullar added.
