The Nurpur police have arrested 112 drug peddlers, including 12 women, in the first six months of the year as part of a crackdown on the illegal drug trade. The arrests were made in 64 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between January 1 and June 22.
Rising involvement of women in drug trafficking
Police officials have expressed concern over the increasing involvement of women in drug trafficking, particularly of heroin (locally known as chitta) and hashish (charas), within the jurisdictions of Indora and Damtal police stations. These areas lie in Nurpur's interstate border district, making them vulnerable to cross-border drug smuggling from neighboring Punjab.
Despite previous arrests, court convictions, and imprisonment of drug peddlers, the illegal trade has continued unabated, prompting authorities to ramp up enforcement efforts.
Recent raid nets three interstate peddlers
Intensifying the anti-chitta campaign, the Nurpur district police recently arrested three drug peddlers, including two women from Punjab, under the Indora police station. Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house at Tamota village and seized 39.14 grams of heroin (chitta).
During the investigation, police uncovered an interstate drug peddling network operated by the house owner, Kalpana (27). The arrested individuals include Kalpana, her elder sister Gulfam alias Rita (32), and her brother-in-law Pawan Kumar (36), all residents of Balagan village under Dasuya police station in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab.
Police action and legal proceedings
Nurpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kulbhushan Verma confirmed that the contraband was seized and all three members of the interstate drug peddling racket were arrested. A case under Sections 21, 29, 61, and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused.
The police continue to investigate the network, aiming to dismantle the supply chain and bring more offenders to justice.
