A three-member women's gang, suspected of moving across Uttar Pradesh districts to commit a series of jewellery thefts, has been apprehended by the Aminabad police. The arrests took place on Tuesday, putting an end to their alleged spree targeting busy marketplaces and public transport.
Modus Operandi: A Strategy of Constant Movement
According to SHO Sunil Kumar Azad, the accused employed a clever tactic to evade capture. The trio, identified as Sunita (30) from Basti, her sister Anita (35) from Gorakhpur, and their sister-in-law Kiran (30) from Deoria, would enter a district and operate for a short, intense period. They typically stayed for about 10 to 15 days, focusing on crowded areas like markets and public transport vehicles such as e-rickshaws. After this period, they would shift to a new district to avoid creating a recognizable pattern for local police.
The Complaint That Led to the Breakthrough
The case unraveled after Mithilesh Jaiswal of Rathkhana filed a formal complaint. She reported that on January 3, while travelling with her daughter from Post Office Tiraha towards Rakabganj in an e-rickshaw, three women stole her gold chain and locket, as well as a gold chain from her daughter. Based on this complaint, an FIR was registered at Aminabad police station under section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Investigation and Arrest
Police launched a detailed investigation, scouring CCTV footage and technical evidence to identify the suspects. Their efforts paid off when a specific tip-off led them to the Janana Park area in Aminabad. Acting swiftly on this information, the police team arrested all three accused women on Tuesday.
Upon their arrest, the police recovered stolen items from their possession. The haul included:
- One gold chain
- A gold locket attached to a mangalsutra
- Rs 3,800 in cash
The successful bust highlights the effectiveness of combining traditional policing with technical surveillance to track and apprehend criminals who operate across district boundaries.
