In a significant operation driven by intelligence inputs, the Ambala police have apprehended a local resident on charges of espionage. The accused is alleged to have passed sensitive information concerning military and Air Force movements to a module operating from Pakistan.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
The accused has been identified as Sunil Kumar, a resident of Sabga village in Ambala district. Acting on specific intelligence, the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA)-II of the Ambala police took him into custody on Friday. The following day, Saturday, he was presented before the district court in Ambala. The court granted the police a four-day remand, allowing for further interrogation of the suspect.
Details of the Espionage Case
Ambala Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajit Singh Shekhawat provided crucial details about the case. Sunil Kumar worked as a supervisor for construction projects handled by a private firm within the defence area of Ambala Cantonment. Due to his role, he possessed an admission card issued by military authorities, granting him access to the restricted zone for work purposes.
According to the police, Kumar's involvement with the Pakistani module began through a honeytrap, and the contact lasted for approximately seven to eight months. The district police have registered a formal case against him under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India. The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at the Ambala Cantonment police station.
Investigation and Evidence
SP Shekhawat explained that the arrest followed a precise tip-off from intelligence agencies regarding Kumar's activities. "We received specific intelligence input about his activity and, based on the same, he was interrogated," the SP stated. A forensic examination of his mobile phone yielded incriminating evidence.
The investigation revealed that Kumar was sharing basic yet sensitive information about the movement of military units with the Pakistan-based operatives. The police have seized his phone and other materials for a deeper probe. Authorities have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing to uncover the full extent of the espionage network and any potential accomplices.
This arrest highlights the persistent vigilance of Indian security agencies against threats to national security and the sophisticated methods, such as honeytraps, employed by cross-border elements to compromise individuals with access to sensitive areas.
