Chennai: A 54-year-old autorickshaw driver was arrested by Teynampet police on Tuesday for allegedly sexually harassing a 27-year-old woman passenger. The incident took place on Tuesday evening when the woman, a resident of Arunachal Pradesh, hired the auto driven by V. Srinivasa Rao, 54, of Royapettah, to travel from Mylapore to Teynampet.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, after the trip ended, as the woman was alighting from the vehicle, Srinivasa Rao purportedly kissed her hand. The woman immediately lodged a complaint with the Teynampet police, leading to the driver's arrest. He was later produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
Police Response
The police acted swiftly on the complaint, registering a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for sexual harassment. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain if the driver has a history of similar offenses.
