Bhopal bus conductor held for rape, blackmail of widow

A 38-year-old woman in Bhopal, who works as a salesperson to provide for her two children, has filed a serious complaint of rape and blackmail against a bus conductor. The survivor, who lost her husband years ago, approached the Ashoka Garden police on Monday, detailing a harrowing two-year ordeal of sexual exploitation and threats.

How the Accused Preyed on the Survivor

The woman first met the accused, identified as Netram, in Vidisha approximately two years ago. According to the police complaint, the situation took a sinister turn in 2024. Netram allegedly lured the woman to a hotel in the Ashoka Garden area by promising marriage. It was there that he established a physical relationship with her.

In a shocking breach of trust, the accused secretly recorded obscene photographs and videos of the woman on his mobile phone during their encounter. This material later became his tool for coercion and control.

The Cycle of Blackmail and Exploitation

After the initial incident, Netram began using the sensitive media to threaten the survivor. He allegedly forced her into repeated sexual encounters by threatening to make the private content go viral. His stated aim was to ruin her reputation in society if she did not comply with his demands.

The woman, trapped by fear and societal pressure, endured this exploitation until she reached a breaking point. She insisted that Netram formalize their relationship through marriage, hoping it would end the torment.

The Disturbing Truth Comes to Light

Netram not only refused her request for marriage, but the woman also discovered alarming facts about his past. She learned that he was already married and had a significant criminal record. Police sources indicate that nearly five cases are already registered against the accused in various contexts.

This discovery prompted the survivor to finally approach the authorities. The Ashoka Garden police have registered a case based on her complaint and have initiated an investigation. The case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by women, especially those who are sole breadwinners, and the predatory use of technology for blackmail.
