Bihar Sees Sharp Drop in Murders, Dacoity, Riots in 2025; No Maoist Violence
Bihar crime rate falls: murders down 7.72%, dacoity 24.87%

Patna witnessed a significant announcement on Monday as the state's top home official revealed a marked improvement in law and order. Bihar has recorded a substantial decline in major criminal activities in 2025 compared to the previous year, a success attributed to more effective policing strategies.

Significant Dip in Heinous Crimes

Addressing the media at Suchna Bhawan, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar Choudhary presented compelling data. He stated that murder cases fell by 7.72%, incidents of dacoity saw a sharp reduction of 24.87%, and riot cases decreased by 17.97% in comparison to 2024. Choudhary emphasized that this decline in serious offences was a direct result of prompt and decisive action by the police force.

The enforcement drive has been vigorous. From January to November this year, police made a staggering 3,35,000 arrests in connection with major criminal cases. A detailed breakdown of these arrests includes:

  • 5,620 individuals in murder cases
  • 1,054 in dacoity cases
  • 2,082 in loot cases
  • 3,630 under the SC & ST Act and in rape and kidnapping cases

Furthermore, the police seized 4,528 firearms and 28,414 cartridges during this eleven-month period, crippling the infrastructure of crime.

Eradication of Left Wing Extremism

One of the most notable achievements highlighted was the complete eradication of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) related violence. Choudhary claimed that no LWE violence has been reported in Bihar for the past couple of years. This marks a dramatic turnaround from the situation a decade ago.

The number of Maoist-infested districts has plummeted from 22 in 2013 to zero in the current year. "The number of Maoist-infested districts used to be 22 in 2013, but now the number of such districts is nil because of anti-Maoist operations in the state," Choudhary explained. He added that only four districts—Gaya, Aurangabad, Jamui, and Lakhisarai—are now identified by the Centre as 'legacy and thrust' districts due to the historical context, following the decline in violence.

Special Task Force's Decisive Role

The press conference also shed light on the critical role played by the Special Task Force (STF) in this crackdown. The STF arrested 1,727 extremists and criminals, out of which 141 were carrying rewards on their heads. Specific actions against Maoists yielded significant results:

  • 220 Maoists arrested
  • 1 Maoist killed in an encounter
  • Seizure of 59 regular arms, 3 police-looted arms, 496 country-made arms, 2,166 cartridges, 299 kg of explosives, 135 landmines/cane bombs, and 168 detonators
  • 20 mini gun factories busted in the current year

Choudhary also credited a stronger intelligence-gathering mechanism for leading to a gradual reduction in incidents of communal tension across Bihar. The press briefing was attended by senior officials including Director General of Police Vinay Kumar, Secretary and IG (Prison) Pranav Kumar, Special Secretary K S Anupam, and ADG (Law and Order) Pankaj Kumar Darad, underscoring the coordinated administrative effort behind these results.
