Police in Ghazipur district arrested a notorious cattle smuggler after a dramatic encounter on Wednesday. The incident unfolded in the Karanda area, where law enforcement officers engaged in a chase and exchange of fire.

Encounter Leads to Arrest and Recovery

Acting on a specific tip-off, a police team from Karanda police station moved into action. Station Officer Ashok Kumar Gupta led his team to cordon off Mainpur market. They spotted a pick-up van loaded with cattle and immediately gave chase.

As the police closed in, both individuals inside the vehicle opened fire at the officers. The police team retaliated in self-defense. During the exchange, one of the accused sustained injuries, while his accomplice managed to escape from the scene.

The injured smuggler was quickly transported to CHC Karanda in Ghazipur for medical treatment. Following initial care, he was taken into police custody.

Significant Recoveries Made

Police conducted a thorough search of the scene and the vehicle. They made several important recoveries:

  • A 0.315 bore pistol
  • One empty cartridge
  • One live cartridge
  • The pick-up vehicle used in the smuggling operation
  • Fifteen cattle heads

These recoveries provide substantial evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Criminal History of the Accused

The arrested individual has been identified as Rohan Yadav. He hails from Devchandpur village in the Rampur Manjha police station area.

Police records reveal Yadav has an extensive criminal history across multiple districts. He faces charges in police stations located in Ghazipur, Chandauli, and Mirzapur.

The cases against him include serious charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and other acts:

  1. Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, and 429 of the IPC
  2. Section 3/5A/8 of the Cow Slaughter Prevention Act
  3. Section 11 of the Animal Cruelty Act
  4. The Gangster Act

This history indicates a pattern of criminal activity that authorities have been monitoring closely.

Police Statement on the Operation

Station Officer Ashok Kumar Gupta confirmed the details of the operation. He stated that his team acted swiftly on credible intelligence about cattle smuggling activities in the area.

"We received specific information about a smuggling attempt," Gupta explained. "Our team responded immediately and confronted the suspects. When they fired at police personnel, we had no choice but to return fire in accordance with standard procedures."

The officer emphasized that the primary goal was to prevent illegal cattle transportation and ensure public safety. He noted that investigations continue to locate and apprehend the second suspect who managed to escape during the encounter.

Local residents have expressed relief at the arrest, citing concerns about illegal cattle smuggling operations in the region. Police officials assure the public they remain vigilant against such criminal activities.
