CBI grills two ex-Kolkata Police DCPs in rape-murder case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned two former deputy commissioners of Kolkata Police for several hours as part of its reopened probe into allegations of evidence destruction and attempts to shield the real culprits in the August 2024 R G Kar rape-murder case.

Interrogation of Former Officers

Former Deputy Commissioner (central) Indira Mukherjee and former Deputy Commissioner (north) Abhishek Gupta were interrogated at length, and numerous documents were seized, a senior CBI official confirmed. Former Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal has also been summoned to appear before investigators next week.

Mukherjee was not linked to the main probe that Kolkata Police carried out for five days before it was handed over to the CBI.

Case Background

The R G Kar rape-murder case, which occurred in August 2024, initially investigated by Kolkata Police, was later transferred to the CBI following allegations of a cover-up. The CBI reopened the probe to examine whether evidence was destroyed and if attempts were made to protect the actual perpetrators.
