DEHRADUN: A 21-year-old student from Dehradun died shortly after undertaking a bungee jump near Srinagar in Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal district, officials said on Wednesday.
Lakshya Rastogi, a resident of Shanti Vihar in Kaulagarh, was returning with his family after offering prayers at the Dhari Devi temple when they stopped at a bungee jumping facility near Mulyagaon. Soon after completing the jump and returning to the platform, he complained of severe chest and abdominal pain and experienced difficulty breathing, district officials said.
His family initially took him to a hotel at Ramkund so that he could rest. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly and he lost consciousness. He was rushed to the community health centre (CHC) in Pali around 9 pm, where doctors found no pulse. Medical staff administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but he did not respond and was declared dead.
Doctors at the CHC, citing information provided by the family, said Lakshya developed abdominal pain and severe breathing difficulties immediately after the bungee jump. They said the preliminary cause of death could be a syncope attack -- a sudden loss of consciousness often linked to a temporary reduction in blood flow to the brain -- or a cardiac event. However, the exact cause of death will be determined only after a postmortem examination.
SSP Shweta Choubey said the youth had undertaken the bungee jump at Mulyagaon and was travelling towards Pauri Garhwal when his condition worsened. "Upon receiving information about the incident, a police team was immediately dispatched. The matter is being investigated," she said.
