A tragic incident unfolded in the upscale Mount Kailash neighborhood of South Delhi on Thursday morning, when a 45-year-old domestic help, Meena, was allegedly murdered by her employer. The accused, Dr Manish Gupta, a 50-year-old dermatologist, has been arrested.
Details of the Attack
Residents heard a woman's cries from a building terrace, and later found Meena lying in a pool of blood. Police discovered Dr Gupta sitting on the stairs inside the building, with a blood-stained cricket bat and kitchen knife recovered at the scene. He reportedly told officers, 'Mujhe faansi dedo (hang me).'
According to police, Meena was repeatedly struck with a cricket bat and then stabbed with a knife. The slit on her neck resembled a medical incision, a senior officer noted.
Motive and Background
Investigations suggest that a bitter disagreement between Dr Gupta and his wife over Meena's employment may have triggered the murder. Dr Gupta wanted Meena to leave, but his wife opposed, citing her long service and support during his mother's cancer battle. Dr Gupta had been treated for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder for nearly a decade, and police are probing whether he had stopped medication.
Dr Gupta had reportedly been struggling with violent thoughts, contemplating harming his wife, son, or himself. The couple had been quarreling over Meena's dismissal.
The Incident
On Thursday morning, Meena arrived at the residence around 10:30 am. After washing clothes, she went to the terrace to hang laundry, where she was attacked. Dr Gupta's 19-year-old son was present at home; Gupta later informed him of the attack. His wife was away.
Family's Reaction
Meena's son, Robin, expressed shock, stating his mother never complained about her employer. Her sister, Shaptami Biswas, described Meena as the gentlest family member and demanded answers. Emotional scenes unfolded outside the residence as relatives gathered.
Police continue to investigate the sequence of events, including the dispute, Gupta's mental health, and possible discontinuation of medication.
