A tragic fire incident in south-east Delhi's Jamia Nagar claimed the life of a 72-year-old woman in the early hours of Wednesday. In a separate fire later the same day in east Delhi's Jagatpuri, two individuals sustained serious injuries.
Fatal Blaze in Jamia Nagar
Police received an emergency call at the Shaheen Bagh police station around 4.41 am reporting a major fire. Upon arrival at the scene in Abul Fazal Enclave-II, officials found a house completely engulfed in flames. An immediate response was launched, with four fire tenders and four ambulances rushed to the location.
Firefighters and rescue personnel worked to evacuate several residents who were trapped inside the burning building. All were shifted to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Despite efforts, an elderly woman, identified as Fazila Kishwar (72), succumbed during treatment.
Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the cause of death was suffocation due to smoke inhalation. Authorities noted that Kishwar also suffered from pre-existing respiratory ailments, which likely aggravated her condition in the smoke-filled environment.
Damage and Investigation
The intense fire also caused significant damage to vehicles parked in the vicinity of the building. Police reported that two cars, a motorcycle, and a Scooty were damaged in the incident. Firefighters eventually managed to bring the blaze under control. As a standard precautionary measure, the area was cordoned off following the operation.
Police officials confirmed that legal action is being taken as per procedure. A formal inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact origin and cause of the fire in Jamia Nagar.
Second Fire in Jagatpuri
In an unrelated incident on the same Wednesday afternoon, a fire broke out in a house in east Delhi's Jagatpuri area. The fire started around 1.30 pm in a house located in Hazara Park, behind Chander Nagar School.
The Delhi Fire Services dispatched two fire tenders to the spot promptly. Upon arrival, personnel encountered thick smoke billowing from the first floor of the building. During the rescue operation, two persons were pulled out in an unconscious state.
Both injured individuals were provided immediate first aid and then shifted to GTB Hospital for further treatment. The cause of this second fire is also under investigation.
These back-to-back incidents have raised concerns about fire safety measures in residential areas of the national capital, especially during the current season. Authorities continue to urge citizens to exercise caution and ensure their homes are equipped with basic fire safety equipment.
