Hit-and-Run on Wazirpur Flyover Kills 27-Year-Old Man, Injures Woman in Delhi
Delhi Hit-and-Run: Man Killed, Woman Injured on Wazirpur Flyover

A tragic hit-and-run incident on a Delhi flyover has claimed the life of a young man and left a woman seriously injured. The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday on the Wazirpur flyover in northwest Delhi's Netaji Subhash Place, Pitampura.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to police, the victims were riding a scooter when they were struck by an unidentified vehicle. The impact was so severe that the 27-year-old man, identified as Sourabh, a resident of Chuna Bhatti in Kirti Nagar, fell through a gap between the two carriageways of the flyover. He landed on the Ring Road below. The pillion rider, 30-year-old Priyanka, who lives in the same area, was found unconscious on the flyover itself.

The police control room (PCR) received a call about the accident around 4 am on Sunday. The caller, Varsha Yadav, stated she was on her way to the railway station when she saw a person lying in a pool of blood. "I initially thought someone might be lying intoxicated after celebrating New Year. But I then saw blood and thought it was better to alert the cops before someone ran over the person," Yadav recounted. She added that although many vehicles were passing by, no one stopped to help.

Police Investigation and Challenges

Upon arrival, police found a damaged scooter on the flyover. Sourabh was rushed to a hospital by the PCR van but was declared 'brought dead'. Priyanka was admitted to a hospital and later referred to another facility for advanced treatment. A case has been registered, but the investigation faces hurdles.

A senior police officer explained the difficulties: "CCTV footage was checked in nearby areas. We are yet to determine what kind of vehicle hit the scooter. Since it was night-time, not many eyewitnesses were present either." Furthermore, Priyanka remained unfit to give a statement till Monday evening, delaying the collection of crucial firsthand information.

A Recurring Menace on Delhi's Flyovers

This is not an isolated case. Similar fatal incidents on flyovers have been reported in the capital recently. In September last year, a 49-year-old scooterist died after being hit by a heavy vehicle and thrown off the NH-24 Mangalam Cut flyover in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar. These repeated tragedies highlight serious concerns about road safety, especially on elevated structures where high speed and design flaws can lead to catastrophic outcomes.

The Delhi police continue their search for the vehicle and driver responsible for the latest incident, urging anyone with information to come forward.
