A young couple's evening drive turned into a nightmare in North 24-Parganas when they were allegedly assaulted by a group of inebriated youths. The incident, which highlights concerns over public safety, occurred on Jessore Road in Ashoknagar on Sunday night.
Traffic Jam Leads to Violent Confrontation
The victim, a 28-year-old employee of a private firm from Banipur in Habra, was out with his fiancée in his personal car. According to a senior officer from the Ashoknagar Police Station, their vehicle was stuck in a traffic snarl near Banbania. It was there that a businessman identified as Abhishek Dey alias Chand and his aides allegedly initiated an argument with the couple without provocation.
The situation escalated rapidly. The accused youths reportedly dragged the woman out of the car and attempted to molest her. When her fiancé, the primary victim, protested and tried to intervene, he was brutally assaulted by the group. The attack left him with severe injuries requiring immediate medical attention.
Police Launch Manhunt for Accused
Following the traumatic event, the assaulted woman demonstrated immense courage by lodging a formal First Information Report (FIR) against five individuals. The injured youth is currently undergoing treatment at the Habra State General Hospital.
In response, law enforcement agencies have sprung into action. A senior officer of the Barasat District Police confirmed that raids are underway across the area to apprehend the accused. The police are treating the case with utmost seriousness, given the gravity of the charges which include assault and attempted molestation.
Accused's Notorious Background Surfaces
This incident adds to the already controversial profile of the main accused, Abhishek Dey alias Chand. Investigations reveal that just a few days prior to this attack, local police had arrested several individuals in connection with alleged flesh trade activities from a hotel in Ashoknagar. Reports indicate that this hotel is purportedly owned by Chand himself.
The back-to-back incidents involving the same individual have raised serious questions about criminal activities in the region. Residents are calling for swift and stringent action from the authorities to ensure such brazen attacks on citizens are not repeated. The case continues to develop as police intensify their search operations.
