DSP Shoots Accused in Leg During Dindigul Raid

A high-risk police operation in Tamil Nadu's Dindigul district turned violent on Sunday when a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) was forced to open fire on a notorious 'Category-A' history-sheeter. The incident occurred during a search at the accused's residence.

Police Raid Turns Violent

Acting on a specific tip about a planned murder, a police team led by Dindigul Town DSP Karthik conducted a search operation at the house of Vignesh (31) in CKCM Colony, Savariarpalayam, around 5:30 PM. Vignesh, a resident of Metupatti in Dindigul district, is a known criminal with a long record.

A senior police official stated that the accused has approximately 15 pending cases registered against him. Shockingly, this list includes three murder cases, highlighting the serious threat he posed.

Sickle Attack and Escape Attempt

As the police team searched his home, Vignesh allegedly launched a sudden attack. In a bid to escape custody, he assaulted Sub-Inspector Johnson with a sickle, injuring the officer's left hand.

Taking advantage of the chaos, Vignesh then tried to flee the scene. It was at this critical moment that DSP Karthik intervened. Officials stated that the DSP, acting in self-defence and to prevent the accused's escape, fired a shot.

Aftermath and Investigation

The bullet struck Vignesh below the knee, effectively incapacitating him. Both the injured SI and the accused were immediately rushed to the Dindigul Government Hospital for medical treatment.

Following the incident, the Dindigul South police have registered a formal case and have initiated a thorough investigation into the entire sequence of events. The police action is under standard review, as is procedure when an officer discharges their firearm.
